I studied archaeology at Exeter University and went on to work as a field archaeologist alongside many of the heritage and archaeological disciplines at such sites as the CTRL Channel Tunnel rail link project, and for BAA at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted during the late 90s and early 2000s. Latterly, I worked as a heritage consultant for a number of engineering and environmental consultancies, currently at Terence O’Rourke as associate director. During my consultancy experience I have come to understand the principles of conservation, and its application to both archaeology and built heritage, be that the preservation of archaeological features by mitigation or advising on the setting of listed buildings and protected landscapes that may be affected by development. In recent years I have become increasingly drawn to understanding historic buildings, and the evolution of their architectural history and construction. My particular area of interest is the Georgian and Victorian periods, particularly buildings in seaside towns. My home in Teignmouth, Devon, has some very fine examples of Georgian architecture. As a full member of the IHBC I can confidently advise on development proposals in the knowledge that clients and colleagues alike can be assured that the advice I give comes from an accredited conservation professional who has been assessed by their peers. I am immensely proud of my accreditation, which I hope reflects my long experience within the heritage sector. As a new member I hope to pass on my experience across the archaeological and heritage sector to a broader audience. I also hope that others who have come from a similar background feel confident enough to apply. Guy Kendall is a new full member of the IHBC. The Parade, Teignmouth (Photo: Wikimedia Commons)
