Fleetwood developed as new town from the 1830s to the designs of architect Decimus Burton. The public gardens forming the Mount were built on the largest sandhill in the area. They act as the focal point of the town plan and offer spectacular views across Morecambe Bay to the Lake District. The registered historic park and garden contain two Grade II listed buildings, the Lodge and the Pavilion. Led by Purcell, these buildings have been conserved through a programme of repair and restoration to create public spaces, including an education centre, exhibition space, wedding venue and function spaces. Discreet conservation works included the challenging restoration of external timber balustrading to the Pavilion. The Lodge has benefited from access improvements, the removal of a substation and its relocation to a secluded area of the park, and repair and restoration of elevations, helping to reinstate visual links to the gardens. The works to the Lodge and Pavilion comprise a second phase of a wider project to restore the gardens and complement an extensive programme of The Pavilion at the Mount, Fleetwood, previously functioned as an observatory and signalling point.
