A Dog’s Life by Peter Mayle: a great shaggy-dog story to complement my usual reading. What do you do in your spare time? I like to read history, science and other non-fiction books as I am endlessly amazed at how much there is to know about the world. I have also restored a 1950s wooden runabout boat, and I like to travel. What organisations are you a member of? I am the honorary secretary of the Council on Training in Architectural Conservation (COTAC), and a member of the Heritage Alliance Digital, Learning and Skills Advocacy Group. Which one issue would you particularly like the IHBC to campaign on? I would like to see the IHBC campaign to increase the awareness and adoption of digital technologies in conservation practice, including digital recording, Building Information Modelling and project management workflows. These technologies can help project efficiency in the short-run and the data gathered has untold potential to enhance future conservation outcomes. I worry that as the new-build construction sector is increasingly embracing these technologies, there is a danger of a rift increasing between those organisations that do and those that do not utilise it. It can be difficult to embrace new technology and new business practices, but a little investment now can pay huge dividends later.
