My architect father always taught me to look up and find the interest and beauty in my surroundings, so the built environment was a natural choice when the time came to settle down. I started a HND in building design and construction management with the intention of becoming a construction project manager. But a period of work experience with the conservation team at South Hams District Council opened my eyes to the challenges facing historic buildings, and the continuing balance between preservation and finding meaningful uses for this finite resource. I embarked on a postgraduate diploma in architectural conservation and immediately joined the IHBC as an affiliate member, with every intention of upgrading to full membership when my studies and the requisite two years of experience were complete. But life appropriated my carefully laid plans and I was still an affiliate member some 15 years later. The IHBC held an excellent local event to encourage anyone wishing to become a full member, which spurred me on to complete the application forms. Late in 2016 I received my letter of confirmation that I was a full member and able to use IHBC after my name. I am a practitioner and see my role as enabling owners and developers to understand the beauty, history and importance of the buildings in their care, and to make the right choices when it comes to change. Historic buildings must be respected as a finite resource, but they have centuries of change behind them, having adapted to whatever human life and requirements threw at them. Today is no different, except that we have accumulated knowledge, understanding and a desire to ensure that this resource is managed so that it can continue to inform us about our past while being relevant in our present and future.
