C O N T E X T 1 0 1 : S E P T E M B E R 2 0 0 7 1 Context Cover: The Steble Fountain and St George’s Hall, Liverpool on the first day of the IHBC Annual School (Photo: Jonathan Taylor) What the IHBC did in Liverpool Editorial As Seán O’Reilly says (p14), the IHBC’s Annual School is a magnificent opportunity for networking with fellow professionals across the UK, as well as a unique source of dedicated insights into regional styles, local character and current issues for practitioners working on the ground (even if that local character is a member of the organising committee, enjoying a well-earned rest in the corner of a pub). Context’s report of the event is no substitute for being there. But it might remind some of the participants of what they saw and heard, or give them a glimpse of any sessions they missed. It will give those who were not there a flavour of the school, and perhaps persuade them to attend next year, or give them ammunition to help in persuading their employer to send them. We are very grateful to the many people who made our report possible by contributing reports of the presentations and tours. There is no better place than Liverpool to reflect on how we treat our built heritage.The buildings of the great trading city of the 18th and 19th centuries evoke times when many of the modern forms of trading were pioneered. But the city has to find how to mark its participation in the slave trade; how to celebrate the popular culture of the Beatles era without living in the past; and how to reconcile the interests of a world heritage site with the demands of developers. At times in the recent past the city has had the luck of development booms petering out just as historic buildings were about to be bulldozed to make way for building types that in other places have turned out to be disastrous. Let’s hope that Liverpool’s new understanding of building conservation will mean that the current building boom will not be regretted.
