The Current Position
Liverpool is therefore now on UNESCO’s list of WH In Danger but Liverpool
remains a World Heritage Site and the decision has no immediate
implications for planning or visitor management.
Even though the Liverpool Waters application has been approved,
UNESCO’s main concerns about the impact of Liverpool Waters on the WHS
are unlikely to lead to further consideration for Liverpool’s de-listing for many
years, as those concerns focus on later stages of the project, which are not
scheduled to be implemented until 2031-36.
However, as the whole Liverpool Waters site is within either the WHS or the
Buffer Zone, the City Council will need to give careful consideration to any
application for reserved matters within the site for their impact on the
outstanding universal value of the site.
