• Are you a committed, qualified built heritage professional with the experience we are looking for?
• Does the prospect of working in a dynamic urban centre founded on the long civic tradition of Britain’s First city, with an extraordinary wealth of heritage assets, appeal?
If so, then we have a very rare opportunity to join our planning specialists’ team and help shape the future. You can rise to the challenge of creating beautiful and sustainable places whilst ensuring that there is a strong future for our locally, nationally and internationally significant heritage.
You will benefit from working in a friendly and stimulating team of specialist professionals, whose skills and experience will not just complement yours, but will expand your expertise into all kinds of associated areas, such as archaeology, landscape management and trees.
Given our corporate commitment to sustainable growth and the Borough’s heritage and cutting-edge design, set out in our Strategic Plan, you will sit firmly at the heart of what we want to do and where we want to go as the specialist planning team within Housing & Planning. Now is the time to enhance the profile of urban design and built conservation in the Borough, and to make the most of our heritage. We are moving from being reactive to proactive work streams to help customers through providing new guidance.
The role will involve a stimulating balance of casework and strategic guidance. In your skills set, you will be technically knowledgeable and have eligibility for professional membership, along with a recognised post graduate qualification in urban design or building conservation, have considerable experience of the proactive use of legislation, be a strong and persuasive negotiator, an able enforcer when needs must, an educator, and, most importantly, a passionate design and heritage advocate. You will also have an ability to build a rapport and excellent working relationships with elected members, consultees, colleagues, stakeholders and local communities.
As our conservation and design officer in a rapidly growing Borough with a diverse mix of urban and rural areas including coastal and former port communities, we’ll also expect you to have an ability to see the conservation opportunities that arise from our ambitious urban renaissance programme and from the development of the Council’s own extensive land/property portfolio. We are passionate about customer service and achieving the right outcomes.
Just as importantly, we are also looking for you to be able to bring the ‘right’ attitude to work and to all activities and interactions with the public, in-line with our culture. You will be used to autonomous working and managing a high case load to corporate deadlines. Rather than us spell out what that is in this advert, you will be expected to demonstrate what you can bring to the role.
