The Broads is an internationally important and protected wetland environment with status equivalent to a national park. The historic environment is an essential part of the area’s character and the villages, mills and staithes reflect mankind’s relationship with the water over centuries. With 25 Conservation Areas, 275 listed buildings and the largest area of waterlogged archaeology in the country, this geographically small area punches well above its weight in heritage.
Located in the Planning Department, the Historic Environment Manager is responsible for all heritage matters, including developing and implementing policy on the historic environment, protecting and enhancing all designated and non-designated heritage assets within the Park, and advising the planning team on heritage and design matters.
A major part of the role involves the direct management of two important projects developed through the £4.5M Water, Mills and Marshes Heritage Lottery-funded programme, which will see the delivery of heritage skills training and the restoration of 12 mills by 2022. The management of archaeology and trees makes up the final part of this important and varied role.
We are looking for an experienced heritage professional with a strong background in historic environment and design who is able to coordinate and deliver projects across a range of areas with a variety of stakeholders. Confident and persuasive, the post holder will be committed to maintaining, enhancing and promoting this unique cultural landscape.
Applicants must have a recognised qualification in architecture, significant experience in building conservation and the wider historic environment as well as strong knowledge of planning in the public sector. Applicants should also have experience of management of staff and/or contracts.
