Are you an experienced Building Surveyor? Do you want to be part one of the largest conservation charities home to some of the most important historic buildings and breath-taking gardens in England? Do you want to be part of a new vision? If so, read on….

We are pleased to announce that we are looking for an experienced Senior Building Surveyor, with strong project management experience, seeking new challenges and development, who will want to bring their technical brilliance to the conservation and maintenance of our 3 Year Vision.

The National Trust’s strategy includes plans to invest over £1bn in conservation over the next 10 years. To make that a reality we need people like you. It’s about being part of something different, where cause matters most, and where our decisions are always based on long term, forever, for everyone.

We are seeking a Senior Building Surveyor with Current RICS or CIOB membership.

This is a fixed term contract due to end when the previous employee returns from maternity leave.  At this point we cannot confirm exactly how long this contract will last, but it is unlikely to be more than 12 months.

What it’s like to work here
There’s no other organisation like the National Trust, with such an extraordinary wealth of talent, expertise and insight. And that’s why we’ve created the National Trust Consultancy, home to specialists in every field of our work. A national consultancy, where resources are shared across disciplines and boundaries, it is a great repository of skills, talent and experience.

The Consultancy operates differently to our Properties in regards to office based location. All employees working in the Consultancy have a working base known internally as a ‘hub’.

What you’ll be doing
Your focus will be across the properties in the Midlands region working closely with a multi-disciplinary team. You will be responsible for the annual repair and maintenance budget, delivering significant projects at National Trust properties, as well as working on partnership projects with other external organisations.

You will have a responsibility for mentoring/coaching a team of 4 Grade 6 portfolio building surveyors based out of the Attingham Hub, offering advice and guidance on a series of day to day professional buildings practices to ensure compliance and get the best from the money that the trust invests.

This role also helps provide professional support for the national Assistant Building Surveyors Training Scheme and you may be required to act in the role of APC Supervisor or Counsellor and attend mock assessment panels to assist our APC candidates in becoming new RICS professionals.

As the Senior Building Surveyor, you will also line manage an Assistant Building Surveyor and lead on the planning and delegation of building tasks, working closely with a direct labour team. Support and advice will be available from a wide variety of professionals within the National Trust Consultancy.

You will be supporting and advising General Managers in annual quarterly financial reviewing as well as panning and leading maintenance and improvement works over the next 10 years, by identifying projects to improve the quality of the built assets within the portfolio. This on-going process includes surveying built assets, reviewing documentation and providing information for important metrics such as Conservation Performance Indicators (an annual review of existing built assets and their condition).

You will be working with our property leadership teams, consultants and conservation specialists to deliver the forward-thinking management approach that the Midlands portfolios deserve. Whatever you do, you’ll be doing it alongside amazing people who share your passion for the spectacular places looked after by the UK’s largest conservation charity.

Who we’re looking for
You will need to have:

  • Current RICS or CIOB membership
  • Experience of delivering complex projects in a multi-disciplinary environment
  • High level financial acumen and strong experience of leading large budgets
  • Robust knowledge of building conservation, from asset management to contract management, procurement to maintenance and repair. Ideally with an accreditation, or working towards an accreditation in conservation.
  • A clear client focus and excellent client relationship management skills
  • Excellent time management and organisation skills
  • The ability to work and effectively handle your time across a busy and complex workload.
