Be First: Townscape Heritage Officer

The National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) has awarded the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham funding for an ambitious Townscape Heritage initiative in the Abbey and Barking Town Centre Conservation Area.  Be First is the Council’s regeneration company tasked with implementing the project.  Be First wish to appoint a motivated and highly skilled individual for the role of Townscape Heritage Officer to manage and deliver the project.

This is an ambitious project for a forward thinking East London borough, which focuses on delivering shopfront and external enhancements to over 20 high street buildings in Barking. The project will also develop planning policy and conservation initiatives that support and sustain the improvements made, and delivering a comprehensive outreach and activity programme which increases engagement and awareness of local heritage amongst children, residents and business owners.

This role requires experience of project managing and delivering heritage-focused schemes involving the built environment, an understanding of conservation area policy and management, budget management an ability to work effectively with a wide range of town centre stakeholders to deliver funding outcomes. Previous experience of successful Heritage Lottery Fund projects is welcomed. The post holder should be educated to degree level or equivalent in a heritage, planning, architectural, regeneration or related field.

This is a fixed term post funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund until project completion in 2.5 years time however there may be scope for the role to be extended, funded by Be First, looking at further related activities in the Borough.

A good working knowledge of Heritage Lottery funded schemes and management of conservation areas and historic buildings is required for this role, as well as experience in heritage-led regeneration and an ability to work effectively with multiple stakeholders.
