We are seeking an Historic Environment Consultant to join a friendly, award-winning multidisciplinary team of historic environment professionals, landscape architects / managers, urban designers, planners and ecologists committed to high quality professional work with a strong emphasis on delivering sustainable solutions.
This is an exciting opportunity to work with colleagues across the practice, developing our historic environment research, policy and assessment portfolio, providing strong input to work across key services.
Work would include:
- Contributing to historic environment research, appraisal and assessment projects
- Heritage management and conservation principles, policies and recommendations
- Strategic planning: evidence base, site assessment and policy work
- Development planning: impact assessment, heritage statements, heritage consents, and Expert Witness
- Historic Characterisation, including HLC/HSC, and Historic Area Assessment
- Supporting SA/SEA, providing ‘enhanced baseline’ preparation, expert input and consultee liaison
- EIA: input to electricity transmission grid routeing and environmental assessment work, renewables, other infrastructure and housing/mixed-use development; peer review of Environmental Statements
Examples of recent projects include:
- Advising clients on schemes ranging from major infrastructure to small-scale changes to designated assets
- Training for the National Trust on the setting of heritage assets
- Heritage Action Zone characterisation studies for Dewsbury, Weston-super-Mare and Ramsgate
- Supporting a number of local authorities in preparing historic environment evidence for local plans, undertaking assessment of proposed allocation sites and acting as expert witness at EIP
- Archaeological and heritage management contributions to Conservation Management Plans
- Heritage impact assessment of ambitious environmental improvements on the Forth and Clyde Canal
- Major research projects for Historic England as part of the National Heritage Protection Commissions Programme
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in all aspects of the delivery of the projects. The individual will be actively supporting the strategy for the Planning business unit and LUC as a whole.
We are happy to discuss flexible working arrangements for this role, including part-time working (minimum 30 hours per week) core hours and a degree of location flexibility.
Our historic environment team is currently concentrated in our London and Edinburgh offices, so the role could be based in either location.
- You will be educated to degree level (2:1 and above), post-graduate qualification is desirable but not essential. At least one qualification must be in an appropriate historic environment discipline. However, candidates with extensive, relevant historic environment experience, but more general qualifications, will be considered on their merits.
- It will be essential for you to have a minimum of two years post-qualification professional work experience to have acquired the necessary skills and knowledge.
- You must have strong understanding of historic environment legislation, policy and practice across the UK, and the interface with the planning system.
- You will have excellent communication skills, and the ability to understand the interactions of LUC’s key areas of business with the historic environment.
- You will be confident writing for a range of audiences, and you will be able to work as part of multi-disciplinary teams.
- GIS capabilities (preferably ArcGIS) would be desirable, to a level that enables you to understand and manipulate source data.
- Project management skills would be beneficial.
- Finally, some level of membership or affiliation to the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA) or the Institute for Historic Building Conversation (IHBC) would also be desirable.
