Based in the World Heritage Site of the City of Bath, Bath and North East Somerset Council Planning Service requires an experienced and competent historic environment professional with motivation, initiative and a broad skills base for the provision of specialist advice in the implementation of the Council’s policies and planning and development process for the area.
You will work within a supportive planning and conservation team comprising conservation officers, planning officers, as well as other specialists. The post involves a range of work including contributing to strategies, briefs, policies, and masterplans; managing listed building consent applications; advising on planning applications; guiding new developments and regeneration projects that have historic environment implications and conservation area review and characterisation.
The international significance and importance of Bath is recognised by its World Heritage Site designation. Beyond Bath the Council’s area has a rich and diverse historic environment, including locally distinct vernacular architecture, uniquely important archaeology and industrial and coal mining heritage. There are over 6,000 listed buildings (3% Grade I, 10% Grade II*, 87% Grade II), 35 conservation areas, 16 registered historic parks and gardens and 71 parks and gardens designated locally by the Avon Gardens Trust
You will need to have a degree in a relevant subject, membership of or working towards IHBC and demonstrate experience with a proven track record of giving effective historic environment advice within the planning process and achieving excellent results. This will include experience of historic environment work in the planning field and knowledge and understanding of national and local historic environment policy and legislation.
