The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham have been successful from the Heritage Lottery Fund of over £1m for its second phase of the Townscape Heritage Project. This is to deliver a heritage-led shopfront and building improvement project across the Abbey and Barking Town Centre Conservation Area which includes locally listed properties across East Street and Station Parade. The project will also develop an extensive outreach and education programme for local school children, students and residents.
The Townscape Heritage Officer will project manage the delivering of this much needed heritage scheme which will restore historic buildings to their original form. The project will be delivered in several phases, it is expected to last 3 years and consists of the following key sub-projects:
- Delivering a major scheme of physical heritage improvements to locally-listed buildings and elements of the high street public realm.
- Refreshing the existing Conservation Area Appraisal and producing maintenance plans and a user guide for properties in the conservation area.
- Developing Article 4 directives, a Local Development Order and other planning policy and conservation initiatives.
- A detailed outreach and activity programme (led by a Community Engagement Officer).
