Closer to home, he spoke of the need to avoid fundamentalist postures with regard to oft-quoted documents such as the 1964 Venice Charter, recognition that the founding documents of urban conservation (specifically the Council of Europe’s 1975 Declaration of Amsterdam, the 1976 UNESCO Recommendation, and the 1987 ICOMOSWashington Charter) were products of their time, and that focus today should be on taking current debates forward. Other than urban landscapes and modern architecture, these focuses include the broader concept of cultural landscapes; the interpretation and safeguarding of authenticity; enhanced recognition of modern heritage; and engaging with the agenda of intangible cultural heritage. UNESCO has moved on from categorising a city simply as a ‘group of buildings’. The quality of the urban experience is a matter of genius loci: the spirit of the city and the relationship of the place to the people who inhabit it. As Bandarin concluded: the secret of urban conservation is good overall management; the profession of architecture has a lot to do; and an enhanced level of debate on the key issues is vital.
