To provide the relevant government departments and other government and public bodies with advice and on the draft programmes of UNESCO issued biennially, the Department of International Development through the British Council has established a UNESCO UK secretariat, a UK National Commission and three sectoral committees for education, science and culture. The IHBC is represented on the last of these and an inaugural meeting was held in April 2000. The culture committee of UNESCO UK has 15 members. Considering the immense scope of cultural interests, the historic environment is well represented with five delegate organisations present: in addition to IHBC, the Institute of Field Archaeology, the Garden History Society, ICOMOS UK and the National Trust. The culture committee's remit is to facilitate links between civil society in the field of culture within the UK and UNESCO, and through UNESCO civil society in countries around the world to arrange appropriate dissemination of information within the field of culture on UNESCO's objectives, programmes and activities so as to engage public interest in the work and value of UNESCO to promote those activities of UNESCO in the field of culture which complement and give added value to domestic cultural policies, and to identify and promote UK practice and experience of relevance, and benefit to other UNESCO Member States. The facilitation of links will be assisted shortly when the UNESCO UK web site is established and clearly the Institute can assist through the experience of its members in managing and promoting the value of World Heritage Sites. With the considerable and diverse expertise available through the IHBC as the UK's lead professional body for the promotion of standards in historic building conservation, we are poised to play a lead role as our re-entry to UNESCO becomes more firmly established. What takes it beyond the specialist appeal of a wellresearched original academic work are the introductory review, and two chapters on innovations in terrace house design and the formation of London squares and urban design. The initial review explains the book's linked preoccupations with 'anonymous everyday buildings' and a critique of Sir John Summerson's paradigmatic Georgian London (1945), which resists Summerson's emphasis on emergent classicism. McKellar, for example, rejects the idea of the new middle classes 'copying' classical Taste from the Royal elite.
