contractor started from one end of the roof and it was hoped that, with the arch-braced brackets under, we could cany out the repairs truss by truss without any major hazard. Having seen the particular state of the ends of the tie beams at one end, we opened up several areas and found that all of the trusses and the arch-braced brackets to the intermediate untied trusses simply had no bearing at eaves level at all. It was at this stage that I asked for a complete internal load bearing scaffold to be provided within the church to support the whole of the roof. The requirement for a fully load bearing scaffoldwas tempered because, although we could not see why the roof was still in position, it certainly was there and, thus, we felt that we could relax the requirements slightly. When faced with a situation like this, where all the truss ends are rotten, the decision has to be made as to the type of repair that is appropriate. My view would be that, if individual trusses need repair, it is possible to support them temporarily and provide a traditional repair to the end of the beam, splicing on new timber. Whereas this is comparatively easy in isolated cases because, for example, one can support one truss from two adjacent trusses, when they are all in this condition different proposals are required. A check on the padstones to the truss bracket posts showed only six of 22 to be of stone; the remainder were ad-hoe timber blocks. These were ultimately replaced in stone. We decided that an adaptation of the wheelbarrow bracket quite often used in these circumstances would be appropriate. To achieve this we suggested that individual fibre-board templates would need to be made for each side of each truss, as shown in photograph 4.
