Conservation ControlNVQ: Unitsand Elements Here as I promised is the Summary of the Units and Elements which make up the Conservation Control NVQ. This is how we have summed up the Conse1vation Officer's role, within the constraints of a highly defined industry-wide classification. Unit CC2.1 'Identify situations requiring formal action' is the only completely new function. Please see the descriptions in my article in Context 56 (December 1997, pp 26-27) for more details on how they correspond to typical activities. Since then, the new emphasis on Conservation Plans has made Unit CC6 particularly topical. NVQs: the latest position There has been very slow progress in setting up the formal arrangements for delive1y of the new Conservation NVQs. Heads of Agreement have now been reached between EdExcel, the awarding body which will administer the qualification, the Chartered Institute of Building and the Institution of Civil Engineers, which will be the prime partners for the building industry NVQs; COT AC (and its constituent members, including RIBA, RICS, RTPI, and IHBC) will be a subsidiary partner. When the agreements are in place, a formal application will be made to QCA (the national body overseeing NVQs); it is unlikely that this will happen before Christmas. The delivery ofNVQs is being piloted by COTAC in conjunction with the College of Construction and Engineering at Stoke on Trent. The pilot project, for site managers, is being run in asociation with the building crafts NVQs; it follows a marketing exercise for the craft NVQs which revealed high demand among site managers and foremen. A series of CPD events (open to all) is being run as part of the project; this may provide a template for a nationwide CPD package, with potential for considerable IHBC involvement. I had ho.ped to be able to provide information about assessment arrangements and the costs of taking NVQs in this article.
