CONTEXT 54 - June 1997

David Conway manages the project administration on a day to day basis and I (Carole Davies) provide the technical and research support. The RUPis will be hoping to visit every site on the Register (now approaching 1,300) in order to achieve greater accuracy, particularly in assessing the state of survival of historic fabric in each park or garden. Another aim in carrying out site visits is to meet owners of sites, discuss their views and concerns and exchange information where this is relevant. The Reviewteam Clare Hartwell comes from a historic buildings background and has formerly worked for the Victorian Society, the Georgian Group and for CADW. Clare will be upgrading the Northern sites. Virginia Hinze is a landscape architect who took the Architectural Association graduate diploma in Historic Landscape and Garden Conservation. She has recently worked for East Sussex County Council on a variety of landscape projects including producing Lottery bids and running the county grants schemes. Virginia is an active member of Council of the Garden History Society. She will be reviewing East and West Sussex and Kent. Lesley Howesgraduated as a mature student from the Institute of Archaeology in London and acted as supervisor on multi-period excavations before becoming a pioneer consultant garden archaeologist. She will be covering the Greater London area. Sarah Rutherford trained in Horticulture at Kew Gardens before moving her career into the historic parks and gardens realm where she was involved in freelance writing and management plan production. She will be upgrading the sites in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire, Oxfordshire and Hertfordshire. Paul Stamper trained as a digging medievalist and worked as supervisor on the excavation at Wharram Percy from 1981 to 1990. He has completed a PhD on Hampshire's medieval landscape and has written several books, the most recent of which is The historic parks and gardens of Shropshire. Paul will be covering the March counties. It is hoped that the whole Programme will raise awareness of parks and gardens across England especially reaching out to those local authorities who may still be undervaluing this essential component of the national heritage.
