and chimney pots as part of the conditions of grant. The detail of the new roofscape should complement this policy. Testing development criteria A second way in which the model is used is to test different ways of massing the building as a method of establishing the criteria for development briefs. Both the Trust and the Planning Division of the City ofEdinburgh Council have used the model in the preparation of development briefs. The Trust also encourages architects to make use of this technique to formulate their proposals, rather than waiting to insert their completed scheme. This process helps all concerned with evaluating the development proposals prior to their being submitted for planning consent. This benefits not only the architect who may wish to make alterations to their schemes prior to submission but also the planning decision making. Thirdly, the Trust provides this service to residents who may wish to know what impact new work may have on the views from their own properties. A similar service is offered to assist developers with marketing new housing projects by providing views of the project prior to completion or views from the windows of the new flats. Alternatively images can be generated on a computer screen in an 'interactive session'. The model in the future The Trust continues to refine and update the model. It is now looking at ways of developing new services. There is the potential to link the graphic representation of each building with a database containing the relevant historic data and records.
