36 LAW & PRACTICE embarked on that course of action they were determined to see the matter to a firm conclusion. Many of the councils which made a nil return cited the financial burden likely to be placed on them if they were obliged to serve a notice and then be faced with compulsory purchase. This is clearly an issue where building preservation trusts have a major role to play (as do sympathetic developers). The fact that buildings at risk are not being tackled because of these fears is an aspect I will be discussing with the Architectural Heritage Fund's Development Officer in the near future. List Grades: Only two Grade I buildings (one in Calderdale and one in North Wiltshire) were the subject of actions, but 22 (or 13.5%) were Grade II*. This is a higher proportion for this Grade than for the proportion of all II* buildings. Building types: I have allowed myself a small degree of licence in the interpretation of the descriptions of building type and grouping of classes of buildings at this stage; it has emerged that 54% of all notices authorised have been on dwellings (including seven manor houses). Thirty Potmolen Paint ~pecialist & Traditional Paints GENUINE three (20%) have involved commercial premises; 19 of them shops but also including hotels and a former bank. In the 'industrial' category there were 20 buildings (12% of the total) including eight barns or other farm buildings, six factories or mills and various warehouses. The 'miscellaneous' category is the most fascinating involving 21 buildings or structures (13%) including four redundant churches or chapels; three schools; a former railway station; a dovecote; a folly; and five garden buildings including a 17th century 4 acre walled garden. Complementary powers: It was a surprise to find how little urgent works notices (old Section 101s) were used on the same building as a Sll5. Only 27 instances were cited and only four authorities used both on more than one occasion. It will be important to determine the reason for this as received wisdom within DoE seems to be that the legislation should be used as a two stage process. Serve your SlOl, and then a Sll5 if that does not work. Also, remarkably little use was made of any comlementary or parallel powers under the Building Act or the Housing Act. This has been a brief resume only because of the limited time between the survey deadline and Context copy deadline, and does not contain much reflective analysis, but a more detailed report will follow in due course. I hope some of the initial findings will be of interest and encouragement. Bob Kindred AWARD FOR CHURCH & CHAPEL REPAIRS Entries are being sought from church and chapel congregations in England and Wales for an award in memory of Sir John Betjeman. The Award is to promote outstanding repairs to churches and chapels that remain in religious use. The first winner, in 1990, was St Anne's Limehouse in London's East End. SPAB is running the scheme in 1991 as a tribute to Sir John Betjeman's care and concern for the proper, conservative, treatment of historic churches and chapels of all denominations.
