RESEARCH.. . THREATENED HISTORIC BUILDINGS In an attempt to try and draw some overall picture of the number of historic buildings threatened by neglect, misuse, redevelopment etc, I have begun the task of collecting as much existing information as I can find. So far unfortunately the records I have are rather limited and mostly restricted to a few areas of the country. The data I know of besides my own area relates to Hampshire, Kent (currently under revision) and South Wales. To this may be added the data prepared by SA VE, eg: the recently prepared Estate Villages report, together with records kept by the Ancient Monument Society, SP AB, Georgian Group and for the present the Historic Buildings Bureau. Some of this is related to direct threats to specific buildings, but much is not. In addition, the way data is presented varies widely. However this is a relatively small problem when related to the overall need for information. I am sure that much more information exists and if anyone has anything to add to the above, I would appreciate it very much. The period 1979 to 1983 has seen the successful use of deferred commencement of repayments mortgages for derelict small Historic House restoration and investigations are proceeding with a view to setting up a Historic Buildings Rescue Scheme based on the· use of deferred commencement mortgage funding. There appears to be no published data as to the scale of the problem in terms of how many small derelict Historic Buildings and Buildings in Conservation Areas there are. The next issue of the newsletter will include details of the derelict property record forms necessary to set up the data bank on derelict small Historic Buildings for the scheme to be able to function. To be able to complete these forms could members please start identifying in their areas those small derelict or poor condition Historic Buildings and Buildings in Conservation Areas that are suitable for use as single family dwellings or for conversion into two dwellings.
