I have remarked on this in the IHBC’s 2023 Yearbook. At the Heritage Alliance’s Heritage Day in March, Rene Olivieri, chair of the National Trust, gave a challenging keynote address, in including some witty quotes such as ‘heritage does not stop at the ha-ha’. Referring to initiatives such as open-space networks, he urged delegates to appreciate the complementarity between the natural and historic environment. He quoted from the government’s Lawton Review of 2010, which examined how wildlife and ecological networks could be improved, and suggested that they should be ‘bigger, better and more joined up’. He said that we should be getting environmental organisations on board and should be forging new alliances with them. This theme was borne out by the National Lottery Heritage Fund’s 10 Year Strategy, also launched in March. It has four investment principles, the first two of which are ‘saving heritage’ and ‘protecting the environment’. We need to engage much more with the natural environment and those organisations whose mission is to protect it.
