The next three themes and copy deadlines are: World heritage sites, June, issue 176 (7 April) Glass, September, issue 177 (7 July) Rural buildings, December, issue 178 (6 October) Please contact Michael Taylor at ihbceditorialboard@gmail.com to discuss any editorial submissions or for information about the Context editorial board. 2 CONTEXT 175 : MARCH 2023 Briefing Great Yarmouth’s Iron Duke The National Lottery Heritage Fund has awarded £2 million funding for a restoration of the Iron Duke, a Grade II listed, art-deco pub on Great Yarmouth’s seafront, in conjunction with the Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust and Norfolk American diner chain Zak’s. The building, which will be reused as a bar and restaurant, was designed by Arthur W Ecclestone in the late 1930s and completed in 1948, work having been halted due to the outbreak of the second world war. Despite being incomplete, it was granted a licence in 1940 to serve the soldiers manning nearby anti-aircraft guns. Building work was completed in 1948. The pub’s counters are made from teak from Admiral Jellicoe’s Dreadnought Battleship, HMS Iron Duke (1912). This was the flagship that led the British fleet in the Battle of Jutland, and from which the pub takes its name. In 2020 Great Yarmouth Borough Council agreed a loan enabling Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust to buy the building, which has been vacant since 2008.
