But we can enhance quality in learning while eroding inequality in its access if we adapt the learning on offer to the strengths of the new technologies and platforms. Initial summary thoughts based on experience here include: • If you can not fit the technology to the learning, be sure to fit the learning to the technology. No one can learn glass blowing from YouTube. • Invest in the technology best suited to the learning offered. Keep costs accessible, as audience needs and learning outcomes must remain the drivers. • Offer, and learn from, feedback from users, participants and stakeholders, even those who do not engage. Look to new models. Do not think of learning as an ‘event’ that just happens; it is a process that can combine different experiences and styles of learning. Hub-and-satellite models can use locally-led and personal learning opportunities (the satellite) to address limitations in ‘virtual’ experiences, from the ‘hub’. • Social media may have limited application in learning, but they are critical. Any thoughts or suggestions on these initial thoughts and suggestions are welcome, addressed to director@ihbc.org.uk.
