C O N T E X T 1 4 9 : M A Y 2 0 1 7 47 New member profile Ataa Alsalloum I am an academic who aims to make a contribution to improving management practices through integrating cultural heritage management, urban planning and sustainable urban development. I want to demonstrate clearly and unambiguously the central role that cultural heritage can play in sustainable urban development, and vice versa. Such a demonstration will undoubtedly reinforce the importance of protecting heritage for the benefits of present and future generations. This is particularly so in the case of post-war reconciliation in the middle east and north Africa, where a particular type of heritage in the medinas (old quarters) of historic cities has been under threat. Heritage policy documents issued by UNESCO, Historic England and other related organisations have been my main research interest. Since 2016 I have been a research associate at the school of architecture THE CONTEXT ARCHIVE Past issues of Context can be viewed as flipping-page publications on the IHBC website. My doctorate at Liverpool focused on developing an assessment model for world heritage site cities. Before that, my master’s thesis at Damascus University, Syria, was on the design of new neighbourhoods adjacent to historic cities. Joining the IHBC will certainly contribute to the development of my career in many ways. The IHBC will introduce me to the practice of heritage conservation in the UK and to the academic world of heritage led-regeneration. I am also keen to contribute to Context. I am currently writing an article for Context on postwar reconciliation led by historic religious buildings. I am also writing a book chapter on ‘Threats and Opportunities in Post-War Reconciliation: the cultural heritage of Syria’. Ataa Alsalloum is a new Affiliate of the IHBC
