To start my career I gained my undergraduate qualifications in building surveying from the University of Reading. During my degree I was lucky enough to gain a year-long internship working as a trainee building surveyor for the Royal Household, focusing on the maintenance, management and conservation of the London royal palaces. I went on to complete my masters in historic building conservation at the University of Bath. Following this I worked as a conservation officer for the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead before becoming a heritage consultant in the private sector with Heritage Collective in 2013. Working in the historic building conservation sector is fascinating and challenging. Every day offers up something new, and there is always something new to learn and explore. Rather than simply a career I view working in this industry as a passion. It has the ability to take over your life and way of seeing the world around you, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Having worked and been involved in the conservation sector for a number of years, joining the IHBC was a natural step for me. Being part of the IHBC was important for my career development, but also because I fundamentally believe in the ethics, philosophy and morals that the IHBC promotes. I joined as an affiliate member in 2012 and attended incredibly useful seminars offering guidance on becoming a full member. As my masters course was recognised by the IHBC, following two years of working in the industry I was able to submit my full application form. In December 2014 I was confirmed as a full member of the IHBC. As a new full member I hope to get a lot out of my membership, principally the support, guidance and advice that the nationally recognised professional body can offer. I’m particularly looking forward to taking part in the acclaimed annual schools. In turn I hope to be able to contribute my own experience and knowledge.
