BS (British Standard) 7913: 2013, the ‘Guide to the conservation of historic buildings’, is now available for purchase, marking the withdrawal of BS 7913: 1998, ‘Guide to the principles of the conservation of historic buildings’.
IHBC full member John Edwards, Assistant Director, Properties in Care at Cadw, who led the update of BS 7913, said: ‘After three years and a consultation that brought about many good, but often conflicting views, I am pleased to see that this is now published for use by the specialist sector and mainstream property and construction industry.’
‘British Standards are commonly referred to by the mainstream, most of whom may not even know that conservation principles published by English Heritage, Cadw and others even exist. As such, the British Standard is a very important way of embedding awareness of conservation practice right at the heart of mainstream operations.’
The BSI writes of the 1998 edition:
This British Standard provides information, advice and guidance on the principles of the conservation of historic buildings, and is applicable to buildings, civil engineering and other standing structures which are either included in the statutory list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest or are scheduled ancient monuments.
It also provides information on the settings of these buildings and structures, their interiors and associated contents, fixtures and fittings, and the design of new work in the context of historic buildings. Some of the information given can also be of relevance in assessing proposals for buildings of architectural or historic interest which are not listed or scheduled, particularly those which contribute to the special interest of conservation areas.
This guidance is intended to provide building owners, managers, archaeologists, architects, engineers, surveyors, contractors, conservators and local authority building control officers with general background information on the principles of the conservation of historic buildings, when considering conservation policy, strategy and procedures.
