The district of Wychavon has a wealth of heritage assets, the protection and enhancement of which need to be balanced against the pressures for new development. We are looking for a Conservation Officer who, with the right experience and qualifications can rise to this challenge as part of our busy joint  Heritage Service with Malvern Hills District Council and Wychavon District Council based in Pershore, Worcestershire.

You will be responsible for your own heritage application caseload which requires  knowledge and experience in architectural design, historic building construction and  conservation legislation and practices. You will also provide the built heritage response on a wide variety of planning and related issues and will be expected to defend the heritage position in appeals, including public inquiries. Whilst the role will mainly work to a Wychavon caseload there will be occasions when you will work across the Malvern Hills district also.

You should have a recognised degree level qualification in historic building conservation or closely related subject. You should also be able to demonstrate relevant work experience in a planning or built conservation environment and have the ability to independently undertake site visits across a wide geographical area.

The role requires you to be an organised, self-starter who is able to work both
independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team in delivering a professional and high profile conservation service within the context of challenging performance measures. You should be able to build and maintain excellent working relationships with your colleagues, the public and other heritage professionals to ensure positive heritage outcomes. The role will suit someone who wants to experience a wide variety of heritage issues, both rural and urban and is able to rise to the challenge of balancing frequently competing objectives and priorities.

Appointment and progression through the career grade is dependant upon experience and membership of a relevant professional body eg IHBC or RTPI.
