We are seeking an experienced Conservation Officer to work in the Planning Policy Team in the Royal Borough’s Planning and Building Control service. Working within a small team, you will play a proactive role in protecting and enhancing Royal Greenwich’s extensive historic built environment.
This includes the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site with its Baroque and Palladian buildings, and 22 conservation areas that range from the rich Jacobean detailing in Charlton Village to the picturesque garden suburb design of the Progress Estate to striking avant-garde design in Blackheath Park. Our two newest conservation areas focus on industrial riverside heritage and celebrate engineering innovation and excellence.
You will be responsible for providing specialist advice and guidance on the full range of heritage matters, ensuring that the highest possible design standards are achieved within new development. In addition to providing advice to Development Management on all scales of proposals throughout the planning process, you will also manage a diverse listed building caseload, and provide technical and design advice to listed building occupiers and those in conservation areas.
The successful applicant will need to have an appropriate qualification in Building Conservation, Town Planning, Architecture or a related discipline. You will need to demonstrate a proven ability to make competent decisions on listed building and conservation area related matters, complemented by a good understanding of current legislation, policy, guidance and best practice in relation to planning and heritage matters.
Good communication skills and the ability to respond confidently in a variety of situations are essential. Eligibility for membership of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC) is desirable but not essential.
