The National Museum of the Royal Navy is the UK’s newest National Museum. We are recruiting an experienced Archaeological Data Manager within the expanding Historic Ships Conservation Team based in Portsmouth. The successful candidate will be part of a friendly, multidisciplinary team of museum professionals, conservators and shipwrights committed to high quality professional work maintaining and conserving historic ships. The majority of your time will be spent on the HMS Victory Project, a 15 year long capital works programme designed to stabilise and conserve Britain’s most important historic ship.

Key Opportunities

  • Work will include developing the Victory Information Model (VIM), a detailed 3D model of the ship linked to a database of relevant conservation information, archiving the documentary and digital information related to the HMS Victory Project, and developing standards and practices in archaeological archiving for historic ships within the NMRN collections.
  • This team sits within the Heritage Directorate and focusses on ships within Portsmouth, but also works with other teams across the UK, including Hartlepool and Belfast.
  • Located within Portsmouth Historic Dockyard the role provides an excellent opportunity to be involved in interesting and challenging heritage work within historic ships. As part of an established and dynamic team, the post provides the opportunity to work as part of a unique project and gain experience in the field of historic ships’ conservation.


  • This post does require someone with experience in the use and development of archaeological archive and digital data management, including proficiency with Photoshop/AutoCAD and 3D modelling packages.
