- Are you a qualified built heritage professional with the experience we are looking for?
- Does the prospect of working in Britain’s oldest recorded town, with an extraordinary wealth of heritage assets, appeal?
If so, then we have a very rare opportunity for one lucky candidate to join us, and share the challenge of ensuring that there is a strong future for our locally, nationally and internationally significant heritage.
You will benefit from working in a team of specialist professionals, whose skills and experience will not just complement yours, but will expand your expertise into all kinds of associated areas, such as archaeology, urban design, landscape management and major development.
Given our corporate commitment to the Borough’s heritage, set out in our Strategic Plan, you will sit firmly at the heart of what we want to do and where we want to go as the specialist planning team within Commercial Services. Now is the time to enhance the profile of built conservation in the Borough, and to make the most of our heritage. We are moving from being reactive to proactive.
The role will involve a stimulating balance of casework and strategic guidance. In your collection of skills, you will be technically knowledgeable and have full IHBC membership along with a recognised qualification in conservation studies, considerable experience of the proactive use of legislation, be a strong and persuasive negotiator, an able enforcer when needs must, an educator, a passionate heritage advocate, and a dogged investigator of external funding opportunities. You will also have the ability to build a rapport and excellent working relationships with heritage groups, consultees, colleagues, partners and local communities.
As a built heritage conservation officer in a rapidly growing Borough with a diverse mix of urban and rural heritage, we’ll also expect you to have an ability to see the conservation opportunities that arise from our ambitious urban renaissance programme and from the development of the Council’s own extensive land/property portfolio. We are passionate about customer service and achieving the right outcomes.
Just as importantly, we are also looking for you to be able to bring the ‘right’ attitude to work and to all activities and interactions with the public, in-line with our corporate behaviours. You will be used to autonomous working and managing a high case load to corporate deadlines. Rather than us spell out what that is in this advert, you will be expected to demonstrate what you can bring.
If you would like to discuss this role further, then please contact Simon Cairns, Major Development & Projects Manager, on 01206 508650 or Dr Jess Tipper, Archaeological Officer, on 01206 508920.

Closing date for applications: Wednesday, 13 December 2017.
Interview date: To be confirmed.
