This is an exciting opportunity to apply your research and analytical skills in materials science to unique cultural heritage materials in order to inform the understanding, protection and management of archaeological sites, including protected wrecks and historic buildings. You will work closely with our current materials scientist within the Technology Laboratory at Fort Cumberland and at historic places across England. You will gain experience with the exceptional analytical equipment at the laboratory, and by working with a range of heritage professionals study a broad spectrum of England`s remarkable heritage assets.

The Excavation and Analysis team, within Research Group, is a multi-disciplinary team which assesses the significance of archaeological sites, and buildings and carries out innovative research to further understanding and protection.
You will provide expert operation of, and access to, the analytical equipment within the Technology Laboratory at Fort Cumberland as part of Historic England`s heritage science offer, and undertake research on, and analysis of, cultural heritage materials in support of Historic England`s Corporate Plan and Research Agenda.
You will be a well organised and self-motivated scientist with expertise in the use of at least one of the following: SEM-EDS, XRF or XRD, particularly applied to the investigation of inorganic materials. With a good track record of publication, you will enjoy communicating your work to a wide audience. A team player with a willingness to accept change and work in new and flexible ways as circumstances dictate, your passion for heritage and discovery will shine through.
