Shakespeare Birthplace Trust: Head of Estates

Salary up to £45,000 pa, dependent on skills and experience

The historic Shakespeare’s Houses are places of international cultural significance, welcoming over 800,000 visitors every year from around the globe.

The Trust is now recruiting a Head of Estates to lead a small team who manage the day to day activities associated with the building conservation and maintenance programmes for all the historic and operational buildings.

As a key member of the Finance and Planning Directorate you will act as an advisor and be a member of the Trust’s project teams whose work will impact on the properties. You will act as the strategic lead for all the Trust’s properties and also for the property investment portfolio working closely with our chosen managing agents to ensure the correct and effective management of our land and property portfolio.

You will be responsible for the conservation programmes and the building conservation principles and strategy for the Trust, liaising with a number of stakeholders including Historic England, local councils and a range of heritage professionals.

You will be accountable for providing support and expertise in all aspects of building management by applying appropriate technical and consultancy skills to enable properties to achieve sustainable standards relating to all aspects of building conservation, repair and maintenance and, where appropriate, access and presentation.

To be successful in this role you will be an experienced manager working in property, contract or project management. You will have knowledge of historic houses conservation with a good understanding of the special requirements of working in nationally significant Grade 1 listed historic buildings. Additionally you will have experience and knowledge of general building management, hard FM and management of construction works.

You will be educated to degree level in a relevant subject or be able to demonstrate a sufficient depth of knowledge and skills in the subject areas with a working knowledge of fabric, structure and engineering services in building.

You will possess excellent interpersonal and organisational skills with the ability to think strategically, tactically and operationally about the property services function.
