Bath and North East Somerset is a large and diverse area containing not only the internationally renowned City of Bath which is a World Heritage Site, but also an extensive area of Green Belt, two AONBs, numerous Conservation Areas and an abundance of listed buildings and other heritage assets. Having adopted our Core Strategy, this makes the District a hugely attractive place to work, live and visit.
We are looking to appoint a part time (25 hours per week) qualified Town Planner (or a Planner with a Degree or Diploma in Town and Country Planning or equivalent recognised by and giving full eligibility for membership of the RTPI) within our Planning and Conservation Team. To help us meet the challenges of exciting levels of growth planned at the same time as protecting our unique built and natural environment we are looking for someone who can effectively deal with a wide variety of planning, advertisement, prior approval and other applications throughout the District; particularly relating to the historic built environment. Most applications will be determined by ‘delegated’ authority although some applications may be considered by the Development Management Committee when the case officer presents the application to Members.
The international significance and importance of Bath is recognised by its World Heritage Site designation. Beyond Bath the Council’s area has a rich and diverse historic environment, including locally distinct vernacular architecture, uniquely important archaeology and industrial and coal mining heritage. There are over 6,000 listed buildings (3% Grade I, 10% Grade II*, 87% Grade II), 36 conservation areas, 16 registered historic parks and gardens and 71 parks and gardens designated locally by the Avon Gardens Trust
It would also be beneficial if you could demonstrate experience with a proven track record of giving effective historic environment advice within the planning process and achieving excellent results. This will include:
- Experience of historic environment work in the planning field.
- Experience of design and architectural issues relating to the promotion of good design within the historic environment.
- Knowledge and understanding of national and local historic environment policy and legislation.
We are a high performing and ambitious Planning Service which has been recognised by the RTPI. If you are confident, skilled, self-motivated and enjoy the demands of a busy local authority planning office we would be delighted to hear from you. For the right person we offer a competitive salary, flexitime and the opportunity to work with like-minded people. Our office is based in Bath, one of the most attractive City’s in the country with excellent public transport links.
