But it has been the listing of large scale housing developments, especially the Brutalist reinforced-concrete examples such as Trellick Tower in Kensington built 1968-72 by Erno Goldfinger or the Park Hill Flats in Sheffield built by the City Architect's Department in 1957-60, which have received the most publicity. However, Ministers have had the courage to take possibly unpopular decisions where they felt that the architectural evidence for the importance of these buildings has been convincingly established. Post-war churches were built in large numbers and to the highest standards, and it has often been hard to choose the very best from such a diverse selection. The present lists include structurally innovative examples such as the 'hyperbolic paraboloid' St John Ermine in Lincoln, built by Sam Scorer in 1963, and far more traditional examples like the RCChurch of StMary and St Joseph in Lansbu1y by Adrian Gilbert Scott in 1951-54. Private houses produced many surprises, since few examples were published at the time, and of these suggestions came from both designers and patrons. Transport has produced world recordbreaking structures including the first Severn Bridge, designed by Freeman, Fox & Partners with engineers Mott, Hay&Anderson in 1961, and the much smaller but equally impressive Kingsgate Bridge in Durham, designed by Ove Arup with Yuzo Mikami in 1963. The Communications category includes such popular listings as theJodrell Bank Radio Telescope, near Congleton, Cheshire, designed by SirBernard Lovell, with engineers Husband & Co, in 1952. One surprising failure was the Early Warning Station at Fylingdales on the North Yorkshire Moors: this symbol of the Cole.IWar with its 'radomes' was so radically altered in 1983 that these buildings were rejected . Commercial buildings include landmarks such as Centre Point, designed by Richard Seifert & Partners in 1961, as well as examples of the open-plan office revolution, epitomised by the Heinz Headquarters Building at Hayes Park, Hillingdon, designed in 1962 by Gordon Bunshaft of SOM's New York office. Industrial buildings include the Cummins Engine Factory at Darlington designed by Kevin Roche, John Dinkerloo & Associates in 1964, and more unusual structures such as the Sheldon Bush Shot Tower in Bristol, designed by EN Underwood &Partners in 1968. Public buildings range from large scale local authority projects such as the Civic Centre in Newcastle-uponTyne designed by G W Kenyon, the City Architect, in 1956 to equally impressive, though little known, buildings such as Chesterfield Courthouse, designed by J S Allen and Roy Keenley.
