CLEFT OAK SHINGLES Many architects, conservation officers and other specifiers have been frustrated by the apparent lack of a suitable alternative to the unsympathetic sawn cedar shingle. Carpenter Oak & Woodland has been manufacturing and supplying cleft oak shingles for more than eight years, and are able to supply seasoned shingles ex stock. They can also be shaped or tailored to suit your specific requirements. Our shingles are made from English Oak, quartered from the log with mauls, wedges and beetles. All the sapwood is removed and the remaining heartwood cleft radially to yield a very stable and durable product, not prone to the cupshrinkage, nor the ingress of water into end-grain common with sawn shingles. Our shingles now grace the spires of great churches such as All Saint's Maldon; North Tawton (Devon); and Cleobury Mortimer (Shropshire); as well as many other churches and historic buildings, including some in the care of The National Trust and English Heritage. They have also grown in popularity as an excellent option for contemporary buildings.
