CONTEXT 21 - January 1989

New Town of Edinburgh New Lanark NEW Lanark and the New Town of Edinburgh have each gained a coveted Silver Medal in the 1987 Europa Nostra Awards. The medal was formally presented to New Lanark by Magnus Magnusson at the Glasgow Garden Festival on 31st August: the award ceremony for Edinburgh's New Town took place on 18th October in Edinburgh's City Chambers. Europa Nostra is a Federation of Conservation Societies in 22 European countries. There were over 300 entries for the 1987 Awards, and out of these some 42 winners were chosen; but only 8 received the top award - the Silver Medal. The Conservation movement in Scotland can feel particularly proud of the fact that TWO silver medals were won in the UK - and both were received by Scottish schemes.
