New member profile Tom Hunter After studying for my Part 1 in Architecture at the Glasgow School of Art, I found my way into conservation via the MSc architectural conservation course at Edinburgh College of Art. This led to a very rewarding four-and- a-half years working as the historic environment officer at Orkney Islands Council, which I ended last year to complete my architecture training at Eindhoven University of Technology. What I really enjoy about working in heritage conservation is its immense variety, working at all scales and covering so many different aspects, from principles and policy to helping people solve very specific problems. I am particularly drawn to industrial and military heritage, whose potential to bring a sense of meaning and value to a place is often undervalued. I was very lucky to start my conservation career in Orkney, which has such a wealth of heritage everywhere you go.Working there was great experience for me to build my career on, particularly for developing my soft skills in working with communities. When I joined the IHBC as an affiliate in 2013 I followed in the footsteps of Stuart West, my manager in Orkney, who has always strongly supported my involvement with the institute. I have found it an excellent way to connect to the wider profession, especially as someone at the beginning of their career in a small, remote team. It has also been a brilliant way to follow what happens in other parts of the UK. Looking ahead, I hope that being a full member of the IHBC will help me to keep up with developments in the profession, particularly while I am studying abroad. I hope it will be able to continue to support me as I continue my professional development over the coming years. I hope to contribute to the IHBC through continuing participation in Council+ and the education, training and skills committee, in which I try to represent the perspective of an early-career professional. I greatly enjoyed organising the IHBC trip to Orkney in 2014, and hope I could do something similar again in the future. I hope the IHBC will continue to broaden its scope and outreach as it has been doing in the past few years, and build on its strengths as a UK-wide organisation. I hope it will continue to expand its support for affiliate members to progress to full membership, as I found the advice I received invaluable in making this step.
