The heritage sector connects practical problem solving, analytical building pathology and academic research. You never stop learning: that is why I joined the IHBC – a professional organisation with very high standards, highly respected throughout the heritage sector. Being an IHBC member keeps me up to date with the latest news and projects, and provides relevant continuous professional development. I first became aware of the IHBC while at York Minster as superintendent of works, responsible for a team of 50 artisans and the maintenance, restoration and conservation of York Minster and the historic precinct buildings. The network of practitioners is very strong, and it is this network and shared knowledge that makes me proud to be a member. I left York Minster in 2016 to lead Thompson Heritage Consultancy, assisting in strategic planning and high- level project management, or acting as client representative on complex projects. This portfolio career allows me to lecture in construction on a part-time, flexible basis. I joined the IHBC as a member to support my consultancy, enhancing my offer by adding a network of knowledgeable people working to high professional standards. When you join a professional body you sign up to the philosophy and code of practice. It regulates quality and inspires clients to trust that they are receiving the best advice with support of an extensive network, and that the maintenance and restoration works will be carried out to the highest standards. It is important to be actively involved and I look forward to supporting the IHBC at heritage conferences. My key message to clients is to have a good maintenance plan. I am proud to be a member of the IHBC and find the advice consistently relevant in this ever- changing world. Rebecca Thompson, president of the Chartered Institute of Building, is a new full member of the IHBC.
