Wartime damage and later alterations meant that most of the original interiors were lost, so in his imaginative refurbishment Hines retained historic features in the areas where they survived, and took the building apart to improve flexibility and give greater acoustic protection in areas of lesser sensitivity. At the same time an immense extension has been built alongside, giving the original ‘Factory of Sound’ new life as the BBC’s flagship; it is scheduled for completion in 2012. Illustrated with ravishing photographs, from BBC archives and recent studies by Tim Crocker, this is a wonderful book that shows how a practical conservation management plan can be the basis for an informative and entertaining publication on a building of popular interest.
