Frank Hildy, co-author with Oscar Brockett of the seminal History of Theatre, expands on three maxims which he argues are as relevant today as they were in the 17th century. These are that there is no place for dead space in the live theatre, that black is a colour that should never be found in the audience space of a theatre, and that the space occupied by an audience during performance is known as ‘the house’ to theatre people with good reason. Finally, the latest edition of C20, the magazine of the Twentieth Century Society (Winter 2008-9), features an item by Context review editor Peter de Figueiredo on St George’s School, Wallasey. The school, designed by Elmslie Morgan, principal assistant to the borough architect of Wallasey, was built in 1961. It is one of the earliest, largest and most successful passive solar energy buildings in the world. Morgan died tragically in 1964, having made no public statement about the design, which he was in the course of patenting. After a period of vacancy in the 1990s and use as a homeless persons hostel, it has now become a special needs school. Many of its original features remain intact, with the unique solar wall faithfully reconstructed. The article does not imply listed status for the building, but it provides a further interesting take on the concept of authenticity with which this column began.
